About Gentry.
Singer. Songwriter. Traveler. A man shaped by movement, music, and the long road between who he was and who he is becoming.
Into It.
Music wasn't something Gentry Dodd chose — it was the air he breathed before he could name it. Born into a family of musicians, his earliest memories aren't of cartoons or playgrounds. They're of waking up on the floor of a studio room, the thud of a bass drum pedal rattling through the floorboards, the room alive with the sound of his mother's songs and his father's guitar.
"The first music I ever heard was written by my own family."
His mother was a songwriter. His father played guitar. The house was never quiet, and Gentry was never a passive observer. By his preteen years he was already writing his own songs — not as a hobby, but as the only honest way he knew how to process the world around him.
Road.
Gentry grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina — then packed his life and moved to Myrtle Beach, where he put himself through college before the next chapter pulled him westward. Colorado came first, then five years in San Francisco. In between: a decade spent largely out of a backpack, living from vans and motorhomes, playing gigs and open mic nights in cities most people only pass through.
His entire twenties were lived in motion. Not running from anything — or maybe a little of that too — but genuinely compelled by the belief that life is something you experience, not something you observe from a safe distance.
He Is.
Gentry will tell you plainly that he doesn't know exactly where he's going — and that he has made peace with that. He is passionate, deeply feeling, and possessed of the kind of honesty that makes some people uncomfortable and others feel, for the first time, truly understood.
He has made mistakes. He has burned bridges he once thought were permanent. Some of those he is slowly rebuilding. Others he is learning to leave behind and construct something new in their place. That process — the reckoning, the repair, the slow work of becoming — is exactly what lives inside his music.
"Some struggles he's come out on top of. Others are still ongoing. He writes about both with equal honesty."
What you hear in a Gentry Dodd song is not a performance of pain or a carefully constructed persona. It is a man who has lived broadly, loved deeply, lost honestly, and found that the only way forward is to put it into words and let the melody carry what language alone cannot hold.
